Obesity is a complex disease involving an excessive amount of body fat and a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Left untreated, obesity can lead to serious illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, osteoarthritis, asthma, heart disease and others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 21% (or 1 in 5) adult residents in Santa Clara County are obese, and 25% or middle and high school students in the community are overweight or obese.
